AI Chatbots: A Growing Source of Mental Health Support for American Youth

A recent national study reveals a notable trend: a considerable number of young people in the United States are seeking emotional well-being assistance from artificial intelligence platforms. These digital tools are increasingly becoming a primary resource for adolescents and young adults dealing with emotional difficulties, even though formal safety regulations for such technology are still in their infancy.

The proliferation of generative AI, exemplified by platforms like ChatGPT and Google Gemini, has transformed how individuals acquire information and engage with digital systems. This technological shift coincides with a significant decline in youth mental health across the United States, with a substantial percentage of adolescents experiencing depressive episodes annually.

In this landscape, many young individuals face obstacles to accessing traditional mental health services, such as high costs and limited availability of providers. Consequently, AI presents an accessible, economical, and discreet alternative. A recent study aimed to quantify the extent to which young people are relying on AI chatbots for mental health advice, providing empirical data on this emerging phenomenon.

The research, conducted via a cross-sectional survey in early 2025, involved a representative sample of youths aged 12 to 21. Participants, drawn from probability-based panels, were asked about their use of generative AI tools for emotional support when feeling 'sad, angry, or nervous.' The findings revealed that approximately 13.1% of respondents, equating to about 5.4 million young Americans, have used AI for mental health advice. Notably, usage rates were higher among young adults aged 18 to 21, with 22.2% reporting such use, and a majority of these users engaged with the technology monthly or more often.

Users generally reported positive experiences, with 92.7% finding the AI's advice somewhat or very helpful. However, the study also uncovered disparities, as Black respondents were less likely to find the advice useful compared to White non-Hispanic respondents, raising questions about the cultural inclusivity and potential biases within current AI models. The accessibility, affordability, and privacy offered by AI chatbots likely drive their high utilization, particularly for those who might feel stigmatized by traditional therapy.

Despite the perceived benefits and high satisfaction rates, the increasing reliance on AI for mental health support introduces considerable risks. The opaque nature of the datasets used to train large language models makes it challenging for experts to identify and mitigate potential biases or inaccuracies.
