Queensland authorities recently achieved a significant breakthrough in an art theft case, apprehending an individual suspected of pilfering ancient Egyptian relics from a cultural institution located just outside Brisbane.
The 52-year-old suspect was taken into custody on Russell Island. Police located a portion of the purloined collection, which notably included a 2,600-year-old wooden feline sculpture dating back to Egypt's 26th Dynasty and a mummy mask, inside a camper van at a ferry terminal. Investigators reported that the perpetrator gained entry to the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology in Caboolture by smashing a window in the ancient Egyptian exhibit area. Most of the stolen items have since been retrieved, fortunately sustaining only minimal damage. The accused faces charges including breaking and entering and multiple counts of property damage.
