Canon has officially launched its new RF 45mm f/1.2 STM lens, positioning it as an accessible option for photographers seeking a fast-aperture prime without the premium price tag. This lens, designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras, combines a compact and lightweight form factor with impressive optical capabilities, aiming to fill a gap in Canon's RF lineup for intermediate and enthusiastic users. Its introduction at a competitive price point of $469.99 marks a significant development for the EOS R system, making advanced photographic effects more attainable.
The Canon RF lens series already features a diverse array of standard prime lenses, particularly around the 50mm focal length. Previously, photographers at the entry-level had the RF 50mm f/1.8 STM, while professionals could choose between the high-end RF 50mm f/1.4L VCM and the RF 50mm f/1.2L USM, with prices ranging from $1,549 to $2,599. These professional-grade lenses, while optically superior, remained out of reach for many enthusiasts. The new RF 45mm f/1.2 STM directly addresses this segment, offering a comparable wide aperture to the flagship f/1.2L model at a fraction of the cost, thus broadening the creative possibilities for Canon mirrorless camera owners.
While the RF 45mm f/1.2 is not intended to compete directly with Canon's professional L-series glass in terms of absolute optical perfection or aberration control, it delivers a distinct imaging "character" and the coveted super-shallow depth of field. This unique quality allows for stunning subject isolation and artistic bokeh, which many photographers prioritize over clinical sharpness. The lens is notably compact, measuring only 75 millimeters in length and weighing 346 grams, making it a convenient companion for everyday shooting. It also accommodates 67mm filters, adding to its versatility.
Its optical construction comprises nine elements arranged in seven groups, including an innovative plastic-molded aspherical (PMo) element. These PMo optics contribute to cost-effectiveness while maintaining good image quality. To further enhance performance and reduce size, the lens relies on Canon's in-body lens corrections, a common practice for more affordable lenses designed for mirrorless systems. The autofocus system utilizes a gear-type STM mechanism with magnetic detection. Although Canon acknowledges it might produce slightly more noise than the systems found in its L-series f/1.2 primes, this design choice is crucial for keeping the lens's overall cost down, reinforcing its position as a value-driven, high-performance option.
The Canon RF 45mm f/1.2 STM is poised to be a game-changer for photographers looking to experiment with wide-aperture photography without making a substantial financial commitment.
