As technological and media landscapes experience rapid transformations, the Grand Ole Opry proudly commemorates its 100th year, a testament to its timeless appeal. Ed Rode, a Nashville-based photographer, has dedicated over three decades to documenting this iconic venue. He generously shares a selection of his most cherished photographs, capturing the essence of the performance hall, its celebrated artists, and devoted audience. Rode's published work, "Songwriter Musician," is a photographic exploration of Nashville's prominent figures in music, including its stars, lyricists, and session maestros.
Rode articulates that the venue's deep-rooted customs, its rich melodic legacy, and the exceptional talent that graces its stages present a compelling narrative each evening. He describes his work not as a profession, but as an immersion into a living historical record, contributing a new page with every visit. A particularly vivid recollection for Rode involves a brief, yet memorable, encounter between Pee-wee Herman (portrayed by Paul Reubens) and Dwight Yoakam backstage in 1994. This fleeting interaction, lasting mere seconds, yielded an invaluable expression that affirmed his commitment to always being prepared to capture such candid instances. He emphasizes that over time, he has experienced the venue from all perspectives: witnessing Vince Gill's backstage preparations, Del and Ronnie McCoury's impromptu dressing room jam sessions, Buddy Miller's captivating stage presence, and the fervent fans drawn to the historic wooden circle salvaged from Ryman Auditorium. Despite constant change in artists and performances, the fundamental essence of the Opry remains constant.
The esteemed show, a continuous radio broadcast for a hundred years, continues to attract significant media attention. Historical accounts confirm that on November 28, 1925, the Grand Ole Opry debuted with a 77-year-old fiddler from the Tennessee hills, accompanied by his niece on piano, performing for a nascent radio audience. At its inception, what is now recognized as 'country music' was then classified as 'hillbilly' or 'old-time' tunes. Over the ensuing century, this distinctive musical style has undergone continuous development and diversification, with the Opry evolving in parallel.
Between 1943 and 1974, the Ryman Auditorium served as the venerated home for the Opry. During this period, memorable events unfolded, such as Hank Williams's 1949 debut, which elicited six encores from an enthusiastic crowd. Later, in 1965, Johnny Cash famously damaged the stage footlights with a microphone stand, an incident that did not deter his eventual return to the venue. The Ryman’s stained-glass windows, a distinctive feature, were also captured by Ed Rode, further illustrating the venue’s unique charm.
On March 15, 1974, country music icon Roy Acuff inaugurated the first performance at the newly constructed 4,400-seat Grand Ole Opry House. This significant event was attended by President Richard Nixon, who led the audience in a rendition of "Happy Birthday" for First Lady Pat Nixon and performed "God Bless America" on the piano. The Grand Ole Opry has been instrumental in establishing Nashville as a pivotal music hub, and it continues to be a major draw for tourists. Performers like Jim Lauderdale continue to grace its stage, perpetuating the venue's vibrant musical tradition. Backstage moments, such as Ruby Amanfu and Sam Ashworth entering the artist's entrance, and Del McCoury with his son Ronnie preparing in the dressing room, highlight the ongoing flow of talent and the intimate atmosphere that define the Opry's enduring allure.
