Leica Introduces New Safari and Glossy Black Lens Finishes

Leica has consistently set a high bar in photographic equipment, with its cameras and lenses lauded for exceptional quality and performance. From legendary camera bodies like the M6 and M10 Monochrom to the precise optics of the Summicron and Summilux lines, Leica's offerings are designed to cater to diverse photographic needs. Expanding this tradition, Leica is now launching a series of M-lenses in two distinctive aesthetic finishes: a classic olive green and a sophisticated glossy black, allowing photographers to further customize their premium gear.

Leica's Safari collection, first seen in 1977 with the R3, now extends its olive green finish to a select range of lenses, including the Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH., Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH., and Summicron-M 28mm f/2 ASPH. These lenses retain the superior optical characteristics of their standard counterparts, with aesthetic enhancements such as a silver-chrome brass focus tab and vibrant red and white scale markings set against the iconic green body. These focal lengths are highly versatile, making them ideal for various photography styles, from photojournalism and portraiture to wedding and street photography. Additionally, Leica is reintroducing the glossy black paint finish, a nod to the original 1962 Leica M3. This finish, known for developing a unique patina over time that reveals the brass underneath, is now available for the Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4, perfectly matching the black M11 camera bodies. This special edition lens echoes the 2024 release of the Notilux 50mm in a similar finish.

These newly styled lenses are currently available, with prices ranging from $4,595 to $6,795, reflecting Leica's commitment to premium craftsmanship and enduring value. The Summicron-M 28mm is set to be released in February 2026. Investing in a Leica product is often considered a lifelong commitment, and these new lens finishes provide an excellent opportunity for enthusiasts to complete their collection with matching, aesthetically pleasing equipment that promises both exceptional performance and a unique, personal touch.

These new aesthetic choices from Leica exemplify how heritage and innovation can intertwine, enriching the photographic experience. By offering lenses that not only perform superbly but also tell a story through their design and wear, Leica inspires photographers to connect more deeply with their tools. This approach encourages a journey of creation where equipment becomes an extension of the artist, fostering a unique blend of personal expression and technical excellence.
