The North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) has unveiled the stunning photographs that clinched awards in its 2026 Showcase, presenting a diverse collection of images that encapsulate the beauty of the natural world. These winning entries span vast landscapes, thrilling wildlife action, detailed macro shots, and compelling conservation stories, collectively emphasizing the profound skill and dedication of nature photographers. Canadian photographer and Nikon Ambassador Michelle Valberg secured the coveted 'Best in Show' title for her evocative black-and-white long-exposure piece, 'Wind & Stone,' captured in Patagonia's Torres del Paine National Park. The competition serves as a powerful platform for celebrating visual artistry and advocating for environmental awareness.
Michelle Valberg, a renowned Canadian photographer and Nikon Ambassador, expressed deep honor in receiving the NANPA Showcase 2026 'Best in Category and Show' award. She emphasized that this recognition extends beyond a single photograph, reflecting the core values that shape her work in the field. Valberg highlighted NANPA's mission to promote nature photography as a means of communication, fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world, and inspiring environmental protection. This mission resonates profoundly with her personal objectives whenever she ventures into wild spaces with her camera, mirroring the educational, inspirational, and opportunistic path she has pursued throughout her distinguished career.
Valberg recounted the circumstances surrounding the creation of 'Wind & Stone,' a photograph captured after a week-long workshop in Patagonia, which she co-led with National Geographic photographer and Canon Explorer of Light, Keith Ladzinski. She described the constant evolution of Torres del Paine, where every moment reshaped the scene and the wind orchestrated a wild, graceful dance across the sky and clouds. This ceaseless transformation captivated her artistic sensibility. When Ladzinski departed, he generously lent Valberg his NiSi filter kit, urging her to experiment with it, assuring her she wouldn't regret it.
Initially hesitant about using filters, Valberg eventually decided to give them a try while continuing her work in Patagonia. She observed the rapid movement of the clouds during a time-lapse session, prompting her to utilize a polarizer, a 10-stop neutral density (ND) filter, and a graduated filter. This allowed her to portray the steadfastness of the mountain against the fluid, streaming sky, aiming to evoke that powerful sensation. The final 'Best in Show' image was a 30-second exposure, captured at ISO 40 and f/22 with her Nikon Z8 and a Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S lens. Valberg instinctively knew the scene called for a black-and-white conversion, believing that the interplay of tone and texture would convey the narrative more eloquently than color alone. This experience marked a turning point, igniting a newfound appreciation for filters and leading her to become a NiSi Ambassador.
Valberg describes Patagonia as a truly enchanting region that exerts a strong pull, leaving a lasting impression on visitors. She eagerly anticipates returning in December with her family for the holidays to share this extraordinary place with her husband and son. Her connection to Patagonia remains strong, as she plans to co-lead another winter puma workshop next July and a subsequent workshop in February 2027. She confessed that her initial ambition was to observe pumas, but upon her first arrival in Patagonia, she felt a profound sense of something far greater enveloping her, transcending her original expectations.
The photographer is deeply moved by the raw magnificence of the landscapes and the way the persistent wind sculpts every instant in the area. She perceives it as a living, constantly shifting canvas that offers endless surprises and fuels artistic inspiration. For a dedicated wildlife and nature photographer, Patagonia delivers a sense of grandeur, intricate detail, and spirit that is often hard to find elsewhere. 'Wind & Stone' embodies Valberg's broader dedication to the natural world. She articulates that the essence of her work lies in a desire to heed the voices of the land and its creatures, with each photograph stemming from presence, patience, and reverence. She endeavors to move quietly, allowing the environment to speak, and following intuition rather than preconceived notions. 'Wind & Stone' reflects this intention, representing a moment when nature reveals its unvarnished truth, and the artist responds with genuine expression.
Valberg strongly advocates for photography showcases like NANPA's annual event, recognizing their immense power to educate, inspire, and grant access to places many individuals might never witness firsthand. She believes that such competitions illuminate the fragile beauty of our natural world, inviting people to engage with these narratives through understanding and curiosity. As nature photographers, a shared aspiration is for our images to deepen people's connection to the wild realms that shape us. Valberg consistently seeks the fundamental rhythm that links humanity to these environments. If a photograph can ignite wonder or motivate individuals to safeguard cherished natural spaces, it fulfills the purpose she holds dearest. This shared conviction unites everyone involved with NANPA, reinforcing the collective impact of their work.
