News: Operation Food Search Brings Fresh Local Food to Thanksgiving
Instructions
Operation Food Search, a significant government program serving 23 counties in Illinois and Missouri, is collaborating with a non-profit group and local farmers to offer assistance to those in need during Thanksgiving. Brian DeSmet, the program operations manager, emphasizes the importance of providing fresh, first foods directly from the farms. As he states, "We might get something that was picked yesterday, which is not commonly found at general food pantries." Clint Bland from Bland Family Farm in Jacksonville, Illinois, has grown some of the produce included in the distribution. He explains, "It takes the combined efforts of many farms to meet the needs of communities. We've had to adjust our crops specifically for the Illinois-EATS program, focusing more on the meat and potatoes side." DeSmet further highlights how the program supports both the farms and addresses ongoing food security issues. He says, "It's not just about the farmers; our clients can now access healthy and nutritious food that was previously unavailable to them." Bland believes the program has been a game-changer for regionally produced food, stating, "It's been huge. You can get wholesale volumes at closer to retail prices." Around 200 families will be able to enjoy locally grown turkey and all the sides through this program.
