By Kim SwiftWhile Nintendo has officially recognized Mario Day for approximately a decade, its approach to the annual March 10th celebration has often leaned towards promotional events, discounts, and in-game activities. Historically, the company has shied away from using this occasion for major software launches or groundbreaking announcements, maintaining a cautious yet celebratory stance towards its iconic mascot's special day.
For Mario Day 2026, Nintendo is diverging slightly from its usual strategy by introducing three vintage Mario games to the Nintendo Classics collection. Subscribers to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack will gain access to these titles starting March 10th. The new additions include the original 2004 Game Boy Advance puzzle-platformer "Mario vs. Donkey Kong," along with two titles from the Virtual Boy era: "Mario's Tennis" and "Mario Clash," both originally released in 1995.
Nintendo's decision to revive "Mario's Tennis" and "Mario Clash" for its Virtual Boy collection is particularly noteworthy. For years, the company distanced itself from the commercial failure of the Virtual Boy. Now, these forgotten gems are making a comeback, showcasing a more open approach from Nintendo. "Mario's Tennis," often considered the Virtual Boy's most commendable title, offers an over-the-shoulder perspective designed to emphasize the console's unique 3D capabilities. "Mario Clash" reimagines the classic "Mario Bros." arcade experience with stereoscopic effects, allowing Mario to navigate between foreground and background.
The inclusion of the original "Mario vs. Donkey Kong" (2004) in the Nintendo Classics collection is also a pleasant surprise for fans, especially since a remake of the game recently launched on the Switch. This original version, distinct from its modern counterpart which introduced new levels and more casual gameplay options, offers players the chance to experience the game as it was first intended, providing a valuable historical perspective for long-time enthusiasts.
These announced titles represent a deeper dive into Mario's extensive gaming history. Given the somewhat unexpected nature of these releases, many fans are left wondering if Nintendo has more significant announcements or even grander celebrations planned for Mario's special day. The gaming community eagerly awaits further news, speculating on what other surprises the company might have in store for the coming week.
