A Photographer's Unique Exhibition: Capturing Life Through a Phone Booth Window

An unexpected artistic journey began when amateur photographer Chris Bennett found shelter from a sudden downpour in a neglected phone booth in northern England. This chance encounter sparked an innovative project, leading him to capture numerous images from inside the booth, showcasing a unique perspective on the world outside.

Bennett's initial attempts to photograph from within the phone booth were met with skepticism, but the persistent rain encouraged him to reconsider. He discovered that the layers of grime, stickers, and scratches on the glass windows created an intriguing "patina" that lent a distinctive effect to his photographs. This realization transformed a simple shelter into a creative studio, giving birth to his ongoing series, 'KX-100,' named after the phone booth's model. Despite the confined space of 7 by 3 feet, the resulting images display surprising diversity and depth, offering a compelling visual narrative of life viewed through a distressed pane of glass. Over time, as the windows were replaced, he witnessed the re-accumulation of this unique 'patina,' deepening his fascination and chronicling the gradual disappearance of traditional British phone boxes and the ever-changing streetscape of Lancaster.

The project culminated in an unconventional exhibition staged directly within the phone booth itself. Upon learning of the booth's impending removal, Bennett secured permission from BT to display his 70 4x4 prints inside. This unique display, running from October to December, invites viewers to experience the city from the photographer's intimate vantage point. Bennett has extended an open invitation to anyone who recognizes themselves in his photographs to take their image home, continually refreshing the exhibit with new prints. This interactive element has garnered significant public enthusiasm, turning a fading urban fixture into a vibrant, temporary art space that celebrates both personal connection and communal observation.
