Sirui Unveils Astra 1.3x Anamorphic Lenses: World's First with Autofocus and T1.8 Aperture

Sirui has unveiled its innovative Astra series, a collection of 1.3x full-frame anamorphic cinema lenses that represent a significant leap forward in filmmaking technology. These new optics are notable for being the world's first full-frame anamorphic lenses to feature both autofocus and a consistent T1.8 aperture, providing an exceptional blend of image clarity and operational flexibility.

Revolutionizing Cinematic Lens Technology: The Sirui Astra Series

The new Astra cinema prime lenses, comprising 50mm T1.8, 75mm T1.8, and 100mm T1.8 models, are meticulously engineered for independent filmmakers and professional creators. They address the need for superior image quality and streamlined operation, especially crucial for dynamic, on-the-go productions. All three lenses in the series maintain uniform dimensions, design, and a light weight of 600 to 700 grams. They also boast a standardized 67mm filter thread and consistent gearing positions, along with a 72mm outer diameter and a robust dust- and drip-proof construction.

A key highlight is the lenses' advanced autofocus system, which promises rapid, precise, and remarkably smooth performance, adapting seamlessly to both fast-paced action and more contemplative studio scenes. Users can effortlessly switch between autofocus and manual focus modes. The manual focus rings are equipped with accurate distance scales, ensuring compatibility with follow-focus and LiDAR systems.

With their wide T1.8 apertures, the Sirui Astra anamorphic lenses excel in low-light conditions and allow for a beautifully shallow depth of field, enhancing creative control. Sirui emphasizes the lenses' ability to produce a smooth, distinctive anamorphic bokeh, which is characteristic of high-end cinematic visuals. When paired with full-frame cameras, these lenses can de-squeeze to achieve a classic 2.39:1 cinematic aspect ratio, thanks to their 44mm image circle.

The Sirui Astra 1.3x Anamorphic lenses were initially introduced on Kickstarter, where they quickly surpassed their funding goal. Early adopters had the opportunity to acquire these lenses at a discounted rate of $799 each, or a complete set of three for $2,399, which included a custom hard case. Buyers could also choose between blue or neutral flare styles. Post-Kickstarter, the retail price is set at $999 per lens, or $2,999 for the full set. The lenses are compatible with Sony E, Nikon Z, and L-Mount camera systems, a notable development following Sirui's inclusion in the L-Mount Alliance earlier this year.

The advent of Sirui's Astra lenses marks a pivotal moment for filmmakers seeking to elevate their visual storytelling. The fusion of autofocus with a fast, consistent aperture in an anamorphic full-frame lens format provides an unprecedented toolset for cinematic expression. This innovation not only simplifies complex shooting scenarios but also democratizes access to high-quality anamorphic aesthetics, empowering creators to produce captivating and professional-grade content with greater ease and flexibility. It reflects a growing trend in the industry towards more accessible, yet powerful, filmmaking equipment, allowing more artists to realize their creative visions without compromise.
