The 2026 World Sports Photography Awards drew an impressive 23,000 entries from 4,100 photographers spanning 123 nations, underscoring its growing international prestige. While the ultimate victors are set to be announced next month, the competition has unveiled an exceptional group of finalists across its 24 categories, each photo a testament to the power and beauty of sports.
Established in 2020, the World Sports Photography Awards has rapidly ascended to become the preeminent platform for sports photography. This year marks a significant milestone with Canon, a leader in the photographic industry, joining as an official partner. Simon Burton, Co-Founder of the Awards, expressed his enthusiasm for Canon's involvement, recognizing the brand's profound connection with sports photography and the remarkable year of global sporting events that have provided a wealth of compelling imagery.
As part of its collaboration, Canon will introduce the inaugural Canon Emerging Talent Award. This new category is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the innovative work of promising sports photographers under the age of 30, fostering the next generation of visual storytellers in the field.
Showcasing the entire roster of finalists, which can exceed 50 in certain categories, would be extensive. Instead, this feature presents a curated selection of 50 finalists, ensuring representation from each of the 24 diverse categories. From the gridiron intensity of American Football to the graceful challenges of Winter Sports, these images capture a wide spectrum of athletic pursuits. These stunning photographs offer a preview of the potential winners, illustrating the beauty, struggle, and triumph inherent in sports.
