Nikon has unveiled its latest optical offering, the NIKKOR Z 24-105mm f/4-7.1 zoom lens, designed specifically for their line of full-frame mirrorless cameras. This new lens provides a compelling option for photographers, available either individually or bundled with the Z5 II, one of the most attractive entry-level full-frame camera bodies currently on the market, expanding the available configurations for this system.
The newly launched 24-105mm f/4-7.1 lens is engineered for remarkable versatility and portability, making it suitable for all-day carrying and diverse photographic demands. Its optical construction comprises 12 elements arranged in 10 groups, featuring one extra-low dispersion glass element and two aspherical elements to ensure high image quality. With a 67mm front filter thread and compact dimensions of approximately 2.9 by 4.2 inches, it strikes a balance between performance and convenience.
A notable feature of this lens is its customizable control ring, allowing users to assign functions such as focus, aperture, exposure compensation, or ISO sensitivity for intuitive operation. Weighing a mere 12.4 ounces (350 grams), it boasts an impressive minimum focusing distance of just 7.9 inches (0.2 meters) at its widest focal length and 11 inches (0.28 meters) at the telephoto end. This, combined with a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.5× (between 70mm and 105mm), facilitates excellent close-up photography. Even with an f/7.1 aperture at the long end, Nikon assures that this close focusing distance enables photographers to achieve aesthetically pleasing blurred backgrounds.
Powering the lens's focusing mechanism is a stepping motor (STM), which Nikon highlights for its rapid and silent autofocus performance. The company emphasizes that the NIKKOR Z 24-105mm f/4-7.1 zoom lens forms a perfect partnership with the Nikon Z5 II mirrorless camera, providing users with a comprehensive package to explore creative frontiers and immortalize every significant memory or fleeting moment.
The NIKKOR Z 24-105mm f/4-7.1 lens is scheduled for release in mid-January 2026, with an individual retail price of $549.95. When purchased as part of a kit with the Nikon Z5 II, the package will be available for $2,199.95. This pricing positions it as an intermediate option between Nikon's existing kit offerings, both in terms of cost and zoom capabilities. For comparison, the 24-50mm kit is priced at $1,999.95, while the 24-200mm kit retails for $2,499.95, providing photographers with a range of choices to suit their needs and budget.
