Viltrox, a company renowned for its high-quality camera optics, has launched an innovative wide conversion lens tailored for Fujifilm's popular X100 line of compact cameras. This new accessory, known as the WCL-X100VI, effectively broadens the field of view of the X100's integrated 35mm equivalent lens to a more expansive 28mm prime, providing enhanced versatility for photographers. This introduction comes as a welcome option, particularly for owners of the most recent X100VI model, offering a cost-effective alternative to first-party solutions.
The Fujifilm X100 series is celebrated for its fixed 23mm f/2 lens, which translates to a classic 35mm focal length on its APS-C sensor due to a 1.5x crop factor. While this focal length is highly favored for its natural perspective, some visual artists may desire a broader scope for their creative endeavors. This is precisely where conversion lenses become invaluable tools, allowing users to modify the camera's inherent focal length without changing the primary lens.
Fujifilm itself offers conversion lenses for its X100 cameras, with the most recent updates dating back to the X100F model in early 2017. Their WCL-X100 II converts the built-in lens to a 28mm equivalent, broadening the angle of view from approximately 64° to 75°. However, these first-party accessories are nearly a decade old and were developed before the introduction of Fujifilm's advanced 40-megapixel X-Trans CMOS 5 HR image sensor found in newer models like the X100VI. Furthermore, these official Fujifilm conversion lenses are priced significantly higher at nearly $400 each, making them a substantial investment.
In contrast, Viltrox's WCL-X100VI is positioned as a more accessible option, retailing at a competitive price of $159. Despite its name implying compatibility specifically with the X100VI, this conversion lens is designed to function seamlessly across all cameras in the X100 series. A notable advantage for fourth-generation models and newer, including the X100F, X100V, and X100VI, is their ability to automatically detect the Viltrox lens and apply appropriate corrections for distortion and vignetting, ensuring optimal image output.
The Viltrox WCL-X100VI incorporates a sophisticated optical design, featuring five elements arranged in four distinct groups, which includes two high-refractive-index lenses to maintain image clarity and sharpness. The front element of the lens is treated with a specialized coating that repels both dirt and water, enhancing its durability and ease of maintenance. This conversion lens also includes a 49mm front filter thread, matching the built-in lens when used with an adapter, and adds an additional 36.6 millimeters (approximately 1.44 inches) to the overall length of the X100's lens assembly.
This new offering from Viltrox is now readily available in both black and silver finishes, thoughtfully designed to complement the aesthetic of the Fujifilm X100 cameras. The WCL-X100VI offers an enticing proposition for X100 users seeking to expand their creative possibilities with a wider field of view, combining excellent performance with an attractive price point.
