Cosina Voigtländer is bringing its celebrated APO-Lanthar 28mm f/2 Aspherical lens, hailed as the finest wide-angle optic in the company's history, to Sony E-mount and Nikon Z-mount camera systems. This premium full-frame prime lens, initially introduced for Leica M-mount in June, extends its reach to a broader audience of photographers seeking exceptional image quality.
The APO-Lanthar 28mm f/2 Aspherical lens, now available for E and Z mounts, mirrors the optical design and core specifications of its original M-mount counterpart. Constructed with 12 elements arranged in eight groups, the lens incorporates six anomalous partial dispersion glass elements and two double-sided aspherical elements. A sophisticated floating mechanism further enhances image quality, ensuring consistently sharp results across the entire focusing range. Cosina asserts that this meticulous design thoroughly suppresses aberrations, particularly axial chromatic aberrations, aiming to deliver peak resolution and contrast.
A significant enhancement in these new versions is the improved close-focusing distance. While the rangefinder-coupled VM-mount lens had a minimum focus of 0.7 meters (2.3 feet) through the viewfinder and 0.5 meters (1.6 feet) via live view, the E and Z-mount variants can achieve a closer focus of 0.28 meters (0.92 feet), yielding a maximum magnification of 1:6.9. Despite these advancements, the lenses remain manual focus only, featuring an all-metal helicoid unit that guarantees precise and smooth focus adjustments.
Cosmetic and structural differences distinguish the E and Z-mount models. The E-mount lens boasts a refined diamond-knurled texture on its focus and aperture rings, accented by red numerical markings. In contrast, the Nikon Z-mount version adopts a more vintage-inspired aesthetic for its control rings, similar to the original VM-mount, with yellow markings. Both lenses, though slightly longer and heavier than the VM-mount (350 grams for Z-mount, 325 grams for E-mount, compared to 265 grams for VM-mount), maintain a 49mm filter thread size.
The Sony E-mount version is slated for release in December, followed by the Nikon Z-mount version in January 2026. While official U.S. pricing is yet to be announced, Japanese pricing suggests a retail cost of approximately $850, with potential increases in the U.S. due to tariffs.
The introduction of the Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 28mm f/2 Aspherical lens to Sony E and Nikon Z mounts represents a compelling development for photographers who prioritize optical excellence and manual control. In an era dominated by autofocus systems, the commitment to manual focus, paired with such a sophisticated optical formula, underscores a dedication to precision and image fidelity. This lens is not merely a tool but a statement—a testament to the enduring value of meticulous craftsmanship and the artistic vision it enables. It invites photographers to slow down, engage with their equipment, and truly master their focus, ultimately leading to images of remarkable clarity and character. The inclusion of distinct design elements for each mount further highlights a thoughtful approach to user experience, catering to the aesthetic preferences of different camera communities while delivering a universally high standard of performance.
