Viltrox Introduces Wide Conversion Lens for Fujifilm X100 Series Cameras

Photography Advice Debunked: Separating Fact from Fiction

Godox Unveils AD300Pro II: Enhanced Outdoor Flash with Advanced Features

Viltrox has recently unveiled its latest photographic accessory, the TCL-X100VI telephoto conversion lens, specifically crafted for the esteemed Fujifilm X100 camera lineage. This introduction runs parallel to the release of a complementary wide-angle conversion lens, offering X100 users diverse focal length options. The TCL-X100VI enhances the camera's native focal length by 1.4 times, effectively transforming the X100's fixed lens into a versatile 50mm equivalent. This development from Viltrox, a company celebrated for its high-quality yet budget-friendly optics, is poised to attract many Fujifilm enthusiasts.
Despite its designation, the Viltrox TCL-X100VI demonstrates broad compatibility across all iterations of the X100 camera series. A notable advantage emerges when this conversion lens is paired with fourth-generation X100 models and subsequent releases, including the X100F, X100V, and the latest X100VI. In these newer camera bodies, the lens is automatically recognized, triggering precise in-camera adjustments for vignetting and image distortion. This intelligent integration ensures optimal image quality, mirroring the advanced correction capabilities offered by Fujifilm's proprietary conversion lenses but with Viltrox's contemporary optical engineering.
The telephoto conversion lenses from Fujifilm, which have not seen an update since the X100F's debut in 2017, offer similar magnification ratios to Viltrox's new product. However, Viltrox distinguishes itself by providing an updated optical design at a significantly reduced cost. Priced at $189, the Viltrox TCL-X100VI stands in stark contrast to Fujifilm's first-party telephoto conversion lens, which retails for $399. This substantial price difference makes Viltrox's offering a highly appealing choice for photographers seeking to extend their X100's reach without a premium investment. Furthermore, Viltrox, like Fujifilm, offers its new conversion lenses in both black and silver, ensuring aesthetic harmony with the various X100 camera finishes.
Delving into the technical aspects, the Viltrox TCL-X100VI is meticulously constructed with five optical elements arranged in four groups. This sophisticated design incorporates two high-refractive-index elements and one extra-low dispersion element, all contributing to superior image clarity and minimal chromatic aberration. The lens adds a moderate weight of 230 grams (8.1 ounces) to the X100VI, which itself weighs 521 grams (18.4 ounces) with its battery and memory card. Physically, the TCL-X100VI extends the camera's built-in lens by 45 millimeters (1.8 inches). A convenient feature is the integrated filter thread, which accommodates 67mm filters, providing an upgrade from the 49mm filters typically used with X100 series cameras via an adapter.
While the TCL-X100VI seamlessly integrates with any X100 model's inherent 23mm f/2 lens (equivalent to 35mm), its true potential shines when combined with the X100VI's enhanced digital crop functionalities. The X100VI sets itself apart from its predecessors with a high-resolution 40-megapixel X-Trans CMOS HR image sensor, which significantly improves its in-camera digital crop modes. This allows for digital teleconverter settings that simulate 50mm (at 20-megapixels) and 70mm (at 10-megapixels) equivalent focal lengths. When the 1.4x teleconverter conversion lens is attached, these digital crop modes are further augmented, offering effective focal lengths of 70mm and approximately 100mm at the same impressive megapixel counts. This combination provides photographers with unparalleled flexibility and creative control over their compositions.
